A few weeks ago I was driving my daughter’s best friend C to our house. Britney Spears’ Toxic started playing on the radio. I asked if she knew about Britney Spears. (kinda was her answer). That got us into a conversation that went like this:
You know what, when Britney Spears was popular she was what, 15, maybe 16? She was highly objectified and sexualized (to which C acknowledged). It wasn’t her fault. She was a child. For Christ’s sake, she was a child. It’s on the adults around her in my humble opinion. And C agrees.
Afterward, whenever I think back to that conversation, I also think of Miley Cyrus and her wrecking ball. She was first cast in Hannah Montana at 13. Wrecking ball happened when she was 20. You may or may not remember the beef between Cyrus and Sinead O’Connor. In this case, Miley Cyrus owns Wrecking Ball as a 20 (and 30) years old.
But if you imagine yourself to be Miley Cyrus at 20’s, that’s pretty young to be judged by so many.
In fact, that’s a lot for anyone at any age.
I guess I’m reminding myself this: don’t judge. We simply do not know what’s going on in others’ lives.
